Australia!

Today is ANZAC day, which is one of the major public holidays in Australia. So I thought I would share some things about Australian culture, lifestyle and random facts.

1. I thought I should start by explaining what ANZAC day is-
On the 25th of April 1915 the ANZAC's (Australian New Zealand Army Corps) landed on a Galipolli shore in Turkey. It was a devestating battle, and thousands die. We have dawn services, because the troops landed at dawn and also have marches, and services, in schools, nursing homes, churches etc to remember the servismen and women that have or are still in/at war. And to remember the ones that didn't come home. If you want more info on ANZAC Day, visit ~this website~ (the Australian War Memorial webstie)

 2. Vegemite was invented here-
This is very popular here. It has a very strong taste. Everyone has a different feeling about it. My sister eats it by the spoonfull, but I think it's way to strong for that! I like it on my toast:)

3. We have interesting weather-We have nice weather, then cold weather. It's autumn now, and only just started getting cold. We had above 30 degree days right into March. Although the weather is a lot nicer up North. We do have nasty bush fires, cyclones and floods as well. They are normally when it's near or during summer.

4. We have AFL-It stands for Australia Football League. It's all about kicking an oval shaped ball anuthrough the middle of to big poles at your end. It's very fun to watch and even funner to play. This is big throughout Australia, aswell as Rugby. It's a very competitive game, especially within the supporters. I go for the Adelaide Crows.

5. We have lots of animals-
We have a long list of animals that live in Australia, including some dangerous. I like to not think about them... But we also have some very cute ones:D Koalas, Kangaroos, Wombats, Platypi.. The list is endless.

6. We have interesting slang-
Thongs = flip-flops
Dunny = Toilet
Snag = Sausage
Bloke = Man
Brekkie = Breakfast
Kindy = Kindergarten
They're just a few of the slang words we use :D

7. We have lots of tourist attractions-
We are a very big holiday country. We have caves, lakes, beaches, big things (big rocking horse, big lobster etc.) tourist parks, bush land, landmarks etc. You could never get bored travelling around Australia:3

8. Before the European settlers Australia was still lived in-
We have a large indigenous population. Before Europeans settled here, there were many tribes all over the mainland and islands. There is still a strong indigenous population now :D

9. Farming is very big-
Cattle and sheep  is very popular. As well as many more. I used to love going with my friend and her mum to milk the cows. Also, at the moment my friends cattle are calving. So I have gotten the chance to help out a couple of times by bottle feeding the calves. It's so much fun!

10. Australia is so multi-culutral-
Many Australians - whether they were born here, or recently imigrated - have very mixed backgrounds. I was born in Australia, yet I am Dutch, New Zealander, Scottish and German. And because we all have different backgrounds we can all share our lifestyles with other people. Whether its sharing artwork, games or food. It's a great thing to be a part of.

I love  living in Australia, I find myself very lucky to live here. I hope I haven't bored you! I thought I would just share somemore things about my life.

Art and Craft at School

I have made a lot of things at school, especially in year 8. So I though I would show you what I have made:)
Elephant-
I made this in year 8 art. We had to have pictures etc. of things that represent our past, present and our future. At the top I chose to make an elephant because I couldn't do a Malayan Tapir (that’s my favourite animal) so I chose the next best thing. Plus Elephants are adorable!! I went overboard with the photos, but I like it in that collage way. At the bottom, the foot of pole, I got all of my classmates to sign their name so I could remember them (I also moved town at the end of the year, so it was a nice memento). I loved making this so much; I would definitely love to make another!

House-
I made this in year 8 woodwork. It’s very crooked, and took me forever! I had to take measurements nearly every lesson. I remember that at the start of every lesson I would sit on the floor, with the pieces of wood and lay them out in the right spot. I had to start again a few times. But I’m so happy that I finished it! It sits on my desk very nicely.

Pencil Cases-

In both year 8 and 9 textiles class and I’m proud of both of them.

This one I made in year 8. I call it my clown pencil case; I think it has a circus look to it. I wanted to add the pocket, because I like having that extra pocket.

This one I made in year 9. It was just a quick project, and because I had made one the year before I still remembered some of the skills that were needed. I don’t use this pencil case now. It’s just sitting in my cupboard. But I might soon find a use for it.
I hope you enjoyed reading and seeing pictures of things that I have previously made. I was thinking of doing a DIY post one day. Thoughts? :)

Do you have anything interesting that you have made t school, or anything on general?

Favourite Movies

HiiI thought I would lead on from my last entry and tell you my 5 favourite movies plus my favourite from when I was a child and explain why they are great.

Young Victoria
This movie is about what Queen Victoria went through before she got crowned queen. I find English history (especially about the monarchs) very interesting. So I wasn’t surprised when I fell in love with this movie. This is a beautifully made movie, and looks like it was actually filmed in the 19th century.

Pitch Perfect
This is my favourite movie at the moment. I went to the cinema twice to see it and bought it on Wednesday, we have watched about eight times since then. I’m kind of addicted to how funny and catchy the songs are. I also like how the love story wasn't really in your face like some other movies are. It took me a while sitting in the cinemas to realise Jesse and Beca were falling in love. But it might be just me. My sister and I bought the entire album months ago so we know all the songs off by heart, which makes the experience of watching the movie even better because we can sing along! I also playing think Rebel Wilson did an amazing job playing Fat Amy. She apparently ad-libbed a lot of the lines. I also like how they changed her character to be Australian, I find that a nice touch. This is the new Mean Girls, I’m not sure about other places, but nearly everyone at my school can quote the movie! Whilst writing this entry today I -of course accidentally-  may have  watched it three times.. It's been a very productive day;).

The Breakfast Club
This is such an amazing and very emotional movie. It feels real, especially when Claire comes straight out and is honest about her future relationships with the rest of the characters. I especially like the ending and how the song ties the movie together. I get a bit teary every time I watch this movie!! Because of this movie, it encouraged me to watch other 80's movies, and I love them. Molly Ringwald is an amazing actress!

Angus Thongs and the Perfect Snogging
I love this movie because it is so cute and hilarious!! The things the characters do and go through are just plain funny. Even my mum likes it; she once told my friends that it was like rite of passage for every teenage girl to watch. I was a bit embarrassed, but she has a point. Every single girl on this planet should watch this movie!! Even if they are 75 years old, they will be able to relate to it.

The Hunger Games
This is a great movie and had been produced amazingly! I read the books before I watched it and the producer, actors, costume people and every other single person that helped create the movie has done Suzanne Collins justice. I cannot wait for the rest of this trilogy to be filmed. I am especially excited for Catching Fire (which is coming out this year) to be made as it is my favourite book out of the series.

 Secret of NIMH
I don’t really know why this was my favourite movie when I was a kid, but it was! I’m not even really sure where we got it. I just remember sitting down many times and watching it, and being annoyed when my younger sister didn't want t watch it because it scared her. It’s a movie about a family of mice needing to move because the farm which they live on is going to be destroyed because it’s harvest season. Whilst that is a big problem, I’m pretty sure one of the young mice is sick so can’t be moved. The mother goes on an adventure to find the secret of NIMH so she can rescue her family.

So there you are. I hope I encouraged you to watch one of those movies, even if you have seen it a million times. Or even encourage you to make a blog entry about your favourite movies.
If you have any suggestions of what you would like to see in my blog, just comment below and I’ll try to do what you suggest.
